// 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL SHOPPERS

7 habits of highly successful shoppers.

There's no doubt about it: most of us find shopping a lot more fun than saving. So why not do both? Adopt the seven habits that experienced bargain hunters regularly practice to save money when they shop.

  1. Shop at the right places. The supermarket you choose can have a huge impact on your weekly grocery bill — not all are created equal. Even if you are just loading up on snacks, what you pay at a smaller or high-end market will be different that what you pay at the big box grocers.
  2. Clip coupons. This can be a great way to get more for your money at stores, local restaurants, theatres or sports events. Just beware of coupons that entice you to buy something you wouldn't normally, like more expensive brands of grocery store foods.
  3. Catch the sales. The big sales usually occur once the main season has passed, so try to postpone clothes shopping until August (for summer items) and January (for winter clothes), for example, and invest in ski equipment in March.
  4. Make a deal. Some stores will indulge a little good-natured haggling. Sound out the salesperson, and be prepared to speak to the manager. Be pleasant rather than overly aggressive. You may get a small discount if you offer to pay in cash.
  5. Comparison shop. Comparing deals at other stores could pay off with lower prices. Shopping around for similar products could get you a better-quality item or a longer warranty. Before you commit to a big-ticket purchase, check to see if the store has a "can't be beat" policy, where you can bring an ad or other proof of a lower selling price at a competitor for price-matching or even a deeper discount.
  6. Re-love the pre-loved. Whether you hit the auction circuit, go garage sale-ing or browse thrift shops, re-using other people's stuff is great for your wallet and the environment!
  7. Chill before you spend. Build in a 24-hour cooling off period before you decide to buy anything non-essential. It'll give you time to consider just how badly you really want it.
